Stock management software in Algeria: Excel, standard software, custom build or RFID?

By INVENTCORPUpdated 4 min read

Stock is often an Algerian company's largest current asset, and the least well tracked. The system shows 40 units, the shelf holds 31, an order is promised, a purchase is made for something already in the depot. The right stock management software is not chosen from a feature list but from how your goods actually move.

Disclosure: INVENTCORP builds custom stock tracking systems, including RFID, and is a Zebra PartnerConnect Registered ISV.

Four options, four situations

Option Who it suits Limits
Excel One depot, one person, few items No traceability, typing errors, no real-time view
Standard software (Algerian publishers, stock modules of Odoo, Sage or an ERP) Retail, distribution, SMEs with classic flows: receive, store, sell Less suited to specific flows, complex multi-site setups or field work without connectivity
Custom system Specific flows (production, job sites, stock held at customers, returnable packaging), several depots, an existing ERP to feed Needs a clear specification and a reliable partner
RFID Long stock counts, high-value items, tools and assets moving between sites Tag and reader cost, to be validated by a pilot

Signs Excel is no longer enough

  • Several people edit the same file and nobody knows which version is right.
  • The annual count reveals gaps nobody can explain.
  • You find out about stockouts when the customer calls.
  • Purchases are made for items already in stock, elsewhere in the depot or at another site.
  • Management cannot know the stock value without waiting for accounting.

What good stock software must do

  • Record every movement when it happens: receiving, putaway, transfer, picking, dispatch. The longer the delay between the action and the record, the larger the gap.
  • Manage locations, not only quantities.
  • Handle several depots with transfers confirmed on dispatch and on receipt.
  • Track batches and expiry dates for food, pharma and chemicals.
  • Alert the same day: negative stock, idle items, transfers never received.
  • Work in the field on mobile terminals or readers, even with weak connectivity.
  • Connect to accounting or the ERP so stock value is right without retyping.
  • Speak French and Arabic on screens and documents.

Standard software or custom system?

Standard software is the right choice if your flows look like most companies': you buy, store and sell. It is fast to start and cheaper upfront.

A custom system pays off when:

  • Your flows are specific: production stock and finished goods, equipment on job sites, consignment stock at customers, returnable packaging, spare parts spread over remote sites.
  • You already have an ERP (SAP, Odoo, Sage) but stock data reaches it late or wrong. The custom system captures movements in the warehouse and sends them to the ERP.
  • You run several sites and want one view without changing each site's tools.

When RFID makes sense

RFID reads tags by radio, without line of sight, hundreds per second. A count that takes days with barcodes can take hours. It pays off for high-value items, frequent counts, tools and assets that leave and return, and sites where a stock error stops production.

In Algeria, note that RFID frequencies are regulated country by country. GS1's reference table lists Algeria under bands that differ from Europe's 865 to 868 MHz, so a reader bought for Europe must be configured for the Algerian band before use.

How to start without risk

  1. Measure today: time for a full count, accuracy by location, emergency purchases per month.
  2. Start with one depot and one flow where errors are costly.
  3. Measure again after six to eight weeks, then extend to other sites.

For the method, see Stock count: method and procedure and why warehouse stock records drift from reality.

What we do at INVENTCORP

We design custom stock and asset tracking systems for manufacturing, distribution and energy: movements captured in the field, several depots in one view, same-day alerts, connection to your ERP, and RFID where volume or value justifies it. We usually start with a pilot on one site so you decide on measured results.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best stock management software in Algeria?

It depends on your flows. For retail or distribution SMEs with classic flows, standard software from an Algerian publisher or an ERP's stock module is often enough. For specific flows, several depots or an existing ERP to feed, a custom system fits better.

Can I manage stock with Excel?

Yes, for one depot run by one person with few items. Beyond that, Excel does not trace who did what, does not manage locations and gives no real-time view, which creates discrepancies.

How much does stock management software cost in Algeria?

Standard software is paid by subscription or licence, often per user. A custom system is priced on scope: number of depots, flows covered, mobile terminals and ERP connection. A pilot on one site gives a reliable cost before rollout.

Is RFID allowed in Algeria?

Yes, within the frequency bands and power limits set by Algerian regulation, which differ from the European band. Readers must be configured for the local band.

How do I connect stock management to my ERP?

The stock system records movements in the field and sends them to the ERP through its standard interfaces. The ERP remains the accounting reference; the stock system keeps its data accurate and current.
