ERP in Algeria: when you really need one, and when a custom system fits better
By INVENTCORPUpdated 5 min read
Many Algerian managers reach the same moment: the company has grown, numbers arrive late, each department has its own spreadsheet, and someone says "we need an ERP". Sometimes that is the right call. Sometimes it is a long, expensive project that does not fix the real problem.
This guide helps you decide: do you need ERP software now, later, or something else?
Disclosure: INVENTCORP does not sell an ERP. We build custom systems used before, instead of, or around an ERP, for companies running SAP, Odoo, Sage or in-house tools.
What an ERP is, in one sentence
An ERP (enterprise resource planning software) brings purchasing, stock, sales, production, accounting and payroll into one database, so every department works on the same numbers instead of passing files around.
Signs you need an ERP
- The same data is typed several times. An order is entered by the sales rep, again by sales administration, then by accounting.
- Nobody has the same number. Warehouse stock, accounting stock and the sales rep's stock do not match.
- Month-end closing takes weeks because files must be reconciled by hand.
- You have several sites or companies and management has no consolidated view.
- Controls become risky: you cannot trace who approved a purchase, a discount or a stock issue.
- Growth is blocked: every new site, product or customer adds manual work.
If three or more of these apply, an ERP deserves serious study.
Signs you are not ready, or the ERP will not fix the problem
- Your processes are not written down. If everyone works their own way, the ERP will freeze the disorder or be rejected. First define how an order, a purchase and a stock issue flow.
- The problem is in the field, not the office. An ERP records what is entered. If reps report by WhatsApp, stock is counted on paper and complaints arrive by phone, the ERP will be accurate on paper only.
- Your business has a very specific process that market ERPs model poorly: a particular production flow, a multi-level distribution network, sector-specific pricing.
- Budget and team are not there. An ERP needs key users available for months, not only a licence.
ERP, custom system, or both?
| Situation | Best option |
|---|---|
| Several departments and sites to unify, standard processes (purchasing, stock, accounting, payroll) | ERP with a strong local integrator |
| Processes not yet stable, urgent need on a clear scope | Custom system first, ERP later |
| Very specific business process that ERPs cover poorly | Custom system for that process, linked to accounting |
| ERP already in place but data late or wrong | Custom system around the ERP, capturing activity where it happens |
| Multi-site group wanting one view without replacing existing systems | Custom reporting layer on top of current systems |
Three ways to use a custom system
1. Before the ERP: structure the work. An ordering portal, a stock tracking tool or an app for sales reps defines and stabilises processes on a clear scope, with results in weeks. When the ERP arrives, the rules are clear and the data is clean.
2. Instead of the ERP, for one core process. When a process is central to your competitive advantage, bending it to fit standard software can cost more than building the tool that matches it. Accounting and payroll stay in standard software; the core business runs in the custom system.
3. Around the ERP: capture the field. This is the most common case. The ERP stays the system of record, and custom applications feed it from the field: sales visits and orders, warehouse stock movements, customer complaints, production data from several plants. Data arrives on time and the ERP finally becomes reliable.
What to check in Algeria, in every case
- Accounting compliance: executive decree 09-110 of 7 April 2009 sets requirements for computerised accounting. Ask the publisher for its written compliance commitment.
- Personal data: law 18-07, amended by law 25-11 of 24 July 2025, requires declaration to the ANPDP, a data protection officer, and prior authorisation before personal data leaves Algeria. Settle hosting before you sign.
- Languages: documents and reports in French and Arabic where needed.
- Payment: international subscriptions are billed in foreign currency.
- The local partner: in Algeria, the integrator matters as much as the software.
What we do at INVENTCORP
We design custom systems for manufacturing, distribution and energy, in English, French and Arabic:
- Before the ERP: ordering and procurement portals, stock and asset tracking, tools for sales teams, delivered in weeks on a clear scope.
- Instead of the ERP, for your core process: operations platforms modelled on how your plant or network actually runs.
- Around the ERP: field applications and reporting layers connected to SAP, Odoo, Sage or in-house tools.
Examples of our work: a procurement portal that has managed more than $33M in transactions, and a live reporting layer unifying more than 8 plants for Algeria's largest steelmaker.
Unsure between an ERP and a custom build? Tell us about your situation. An engineering lead joins the first call and tells you honestly what fits, including when the answer is a standard ERP.

Frequently asked questions
At what size does a company in Algeria need an ERP?
There is no fixed threshold. The signal is complexity, not headcount: several departments sharing the same data, several sites, a month-end close that takes weeks. A 40-person SME with three depots may need one before a 150-person company on a single site.
Can custom software replace an ERP?
For one core process, yes. For accounting, payroll and tax obligations, standard compliant software is usually safer. The most common setup is standard software for accounting and a custom system for the core business, connected to each other.
Do we need a custom system if we already have an ERP?
Often, when data arrives late or wrong. The ERP records what is entered; a custom system captures activity where it happens (field, warehouse, plant, customer service) and sends it to the ERP.
How long does an ERP project take in Algeria?
For a mid-sized company, plan several months for the first entity, including process design, data migration and training. A custom system focused on a clear scope can be in production in weeks.
Which ERP should we choose in Algeria?
Large groups usually go with SAP through a certified local partner, growing SMEs often choose Odoo with an Algerian integrator, and smaller firms can start with an Algerian publisher. The choice depends on your processes, your size and the quality of the local partner.
